E.LECLERC AND THE CITY OF CALAIS ANNOUNCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LARGE SHOPPING COMPLEX IN CALAIS
Covering an area of 17 hectares, the complex will include an E.Leclerc hypermarket, an E.Leclerc Drive, a shopping mall and dedicated green spaces.
Following the planned opening in 2018 of an E.Leclerc Espace Culturel in the heart of Calais, the E.Leclerc Movement is expanding its development in the Calais area with the creation of a large shopping complex to be built on a 17ha site on the Rivière Neuve business park, close to a major European motorway (A16/E40).
Facilities will include an E.Leclerc hypermarket, an E.Leclerc Drive, as well as a shopping mall with around fifteen specialist E.Leclerc concept outlets, including a Le Manège à Bijoux boutique, a Une Heure pour Soi perfumery, a L’auto E.Leclerc centre and a E.Leclerc parapharmacy.
A 500m² restaurant area and additional 3,600m² shopping centre available for other specialist brands will be built alongside the initial 15,000m² complex. Brico Dépôt, which already has a store in Calais, has confirmed its interest in the project.
This new development, which will require an investment of around €40 million (€20 million for the hypermarket alone), will create over 400 new jobs (around 250 of which will be with E.Leclerc).
Designed by the Parisian firm Kase Architecture, the complex will boast a contemporary design but one that respects the natural landscape around it. Extensive green spaces and leisure areas will stand alongside the complex’s shopping zone, while the restaurant area will look out onto small lakes. The hypermarket and shopping mall’s joint 700-space car park will also have specific design features (grass parking grids) so that it will blend in harmoniously with the site.
The company expects to apply for planning permission and to submit its application for commercial use by the end of the year.
